Calling all iNat fanatics!

Hello Everyone!

I wanted to let you all know that the John Ball Zoo is bringing the City Nature Challenge to west Michigan. I (@trav_kurtz) will be the point person for the zoo on all things related to City Nature Challenge. Our challenge covers the entirety of Allegan, Barry, Kent, and Ottawa Counties and runs from April 26-29. You will be able to see the full list of cities here: https://www.citynaturechallenge.org/. While this is not purely competitive, there are dozens of other participating cities, including Lansing, so it is fun to see where we stack up compared to other challenges.

I’ve tagged you in this journal post because you’re a top observer in the geographic area covered by our City Nature Challenge over the last year or so. We’re really hoping you’ll participate in this year’s City Nature Challenge; while we know getting observations from as many people as we can is important, we also know that it’s top iNat observers like you that will really push us ahead in the number of observations made and especially the number of species found in west Michigan!

The easiest way to join in is to just make as many observations of as many species as possible in any of the four counties during April 26-29. Helping with IDs will also increase our species number, so that’s a great way to help out as well. And of course, spread the word! City Nature Challenge 2024: West Michigan iNaturalist project: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/city-nature-challenge-2024-west-michigan/.

The details: the CNC runs from 12:01 AM on Friday, 4/26 to 11:59 PM on Monday, 4/29. All observations from Allegan, Barry, Kent, and Ottawa Counties count. We're announcing results on Monday, 5/6, so between 4/29 and 5/6 we will just be working on identifying all of the observations in the project. Also, the more observations we can get identified to Research Grade by then, the higher our species number will be.

We’ve also been brainstorming about places around the area that would be really great to have people go to during the City Nature Challenge – places that have high diversity and/or unique species. We are working on creating a formal list, but if you have places in mind please leave a comment with where we should direct folks.

I (@trav_kurtz) am planning to lead some trips to a few places and you’re more than welcome to join us! Once I have a Google spreadsheet, I will link it in a journal post, and there will be a sheet where you can add your name if you’d like to join us on one or more of these expeditions. Also, if you’re willing to lead a trip to one of the places listed (or any other place!) please add the place, the date, your name as the leader, and potential taxa/species of interest to the Google spreadsheet once it exists, and then others can sign up to join you!

We’ll also be adding bigger, public events to our bioblitz webpage and you’re welcome to join those events as well. If your organization will be holding an event in the April 26-29 window that people could come to and make iNaturalist observations for the City Nature Challenge, please let me know and we’ll add it to the list and it will be promoted in the project’s journal, as well as with the rest of the zoo’s media surrounding this project.

Please feel free to brainstorm other ideas, ask questions, etc. in the comments – and definitely add others to this journal post via tagging them in the comments!

Thank you for sharing @trav_kurtz! I'm looking forward to participating and will spread the word as well. Please do share a link to a spreadsheet once available. I'll happily lead a walk over that weekend to hunt for morels and other spring fungi if there is any interest.

A few biodiversity hotspots that come to mind that are relatively accessible to those with a car in the greater GR area would be:

Saul lake bog (parking may be a challenge here, so better for a small group)
Pickerel Lake Park
Seidman Park
Aman Park
Blandford Nature Center
Howard Christensen Nature Center
Yankee Springs Recreation Area
PJ Hoffmaster State Park
Saugatuck Dunes State Park
Hofma Preserve

Keep us updated!

Tagging @ian_pope and @localpariah in case either are interested in participating

Thanks for leading this effort, @trav_kurtz. I'm excited that the City Nature Challenge is coming to West Michigan! Let's make sure Saul Lake Bog (Kent County) is on the destinations list. It's a Land Conservancy of West Michigan property; I recommend getting in touch with their people to help promote the event.

Thanks for this post! It looks like fun and I'll do what I can to share! The place I would recommend for Ottawa County

Port Sheldon Natural Area
Hiawatha Woods
Hemlock Crossing Park
(Also) Hofma Preserve
Rosy Mound Natural Area
Pigeon Creek Park
Stearns Creek
Grand Ravines
Paw Paw Park
Bass River Open Area
Crockery Creek Natural Area

so many others as well.

For Barry County, I think it would be worthwhile to engage the Barry County Bird Club in the project. They have 400+ people who are out birding every day in Barry County. As far as locations I would suggest visiting, here is my list for Barry County and adjacent areas.
Higher Diversity
Dolan Nature Sanctuary,
Pierce Cedar Creek Institute
Warner Audubon Sanctuary
Sections of Middleville and Barry State Game Areas,
Lux Arbor Preserve (owned by MSU)

Moderate Diversity Places
Maher Audubon Sanctuary,
Otis Farm Audubon Sanctuary
Hidden Pond Preserve

H! The Barry County Bird Club may have 300 members but they are not all birding daily. There is a small core group of retirees, yes.

Sara listed some great places in Barry County. Lux Arbor is private and permission is necessary. Dolan Preserve is actually in Kent County, just north of the Barry County line.
The Barry and Middleville State game areas are fruitful. Pierce Cedar Creek is another great spot!
Cheers, -Anne (Barry County Bird Club)

It's great to see the growing list of new places I need to explore.

I wonder for the purpose of seeing as many species as possible, if it might be better to focus on different kinds such as Insects, Fish, Amphibians, Birds, etc, and find the person(s) who would be willing to lead a walk or event at a particular place. For example, @rdegeer is offering to lead a Fungi-focused event and he helps select the best place to maximize species and participation.

The last weekend in April is quite early in the spring for Michigan, so this might influence what we are targeting as well.

Happy to help. I would love to go on a group event and meet some of my fellow INaturalist enthusiasts. I would also love to learn new tricks and tips for identification. @mmoerdyk , do you think that having a mixed group with a variety of skill sets and therefore a broad target of species at a bio diverse location might be the most enjoyable and also the garner the most species? Then again, there are so many different forms of life to explore that having a guide target a certain area of expertise might be best, as you said.

Hi all,

I recently had a chat with @mmoerdyk about what our next steps should be to coordinate and make this a successful City Nature Challenge, and we agreed that gathering in person soon would be a good idea. I am more than happy to host a little meeting here at the zoo, but we need to nail down a date that works well for as many people as possible. Please follow the link below and input your availability.

I look forward to meeting as many of you as can make it!

Cheers,

Hi all,

Based on the times that the most people could make it, we will be meeting at the zoo on February 5th at 6:00 PM to talk about how we can really make the most of the City Nature Challenge, and also how we can keep the momentum going afterwards with more meetups for the iNat community in west Michigan. I would anticipate that the meeting will last for 1-1.5 hours, and we will be providing pizza and water/soda/bubbly water for anyone who attends. We will meet in one of our new education classrooms, which are to the left of the front gates. Please fill out the Microsoft Form below to let me know how many people to expect.

Thanks for the heads up Travis! I tend to slow down a little in the with my observations during the winter, but your post and invite has me excited. I'm looking forward to participating and meeting some of the West Michigan INat folks in the area.

Hi all,

Just a friendly reminder that we are meeting tomorrow night at 6pm in the ballroom at John Ball Zoo to discuss plans for City Nature Challenge as well as how to build and maintain a more active iNaturalist community in this area. The ballroom is on the top floor of the administration building which is a brick building to the left of the zoo's front gates. There will be pizzas and soda/bubbly water for those in attendance.

Looking forward to chatting with whoever comes!
