Three weeks until kick-off!

Hi all!

We are almost exactly three weeks out from the start of west Michigan's inaugural City Nature Challenge event! As we get closer, there are still some things that need to happen:

I am so excited about this, and cannot wait to see what you all are able to observe!

ONE WEEK! 🐢🦆🪱🐌🐝🐦‍⬛🐞

Hi everyone,

I can't believe that in one week we will be out and about making observations for our City Nature Challenge! It looks like our weather will at least be decent over the weekend. I just wanted to send one more reminder of all the important links and put them in one place.

Global Project: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/city-nature-challenge-2024-north-and-south-america
This is where the leaderboard for all of the projects in North America and South America will be held, so we'll be able to see how we're stacking up in real time with other challenges.

Interesting and Fun Finds: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1FAXtuxiz0HpPeXisUlVyRU27hSZbeI5N8ajozqhYPTo/edit?usp=sharing
The folks from iNaturalist who are running the whole event have created a spreadsheet where they want to keep track of fun/interesting/significant finds. I am the only one from our project who has access to this sheet. So, if you make one of these observations or come across one in the project please tag me in the comments and give a description of why it deserves to be specifically highlighted. I will do my best to keep up on these sorts of observations and get them into the spreadsheet so that your work is getting the recognition it so richly deserves!

List of Species: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1j_MDTB5F2LehLIAT_KtEJLuP4PGPT0x_I2AOFA8uOrw/edit?usp=sharing
Feel free to request access to this spreadsheet. We are doing our best to track the species we see, as well as ones we haven't seen but are targeting.

I want to genuinely offer my appreciation to everyone who is in this project and who is participating in the project. This is going to be such an incredible opportunity to explore and showcase the biodiversity in west Michigan, and none of it is possible without you all!

Day one summary

Wow!

What a first day of City Nature Challenge. You all have done some really excellent work, and we still have three whole days! Here's the rundown as of 11:30 PM:

  • 1,338 observations
  • 566 species
  • 74 individual participants

I only have one request that will make things substantially easier on the back end when we are trying to get all of our observations to Research Grade: even if you have no idea what something is, put a guess in there. It doesn't have to be a species, it could be as simple as "plant" or "bird" or "insect", just having any sort of guess will ensure that your observation doesn't get lumped under the "unknown" category

Thanks, and keep up the great work!

-Travis

One last push

Hi all,

What an amazing weekend we've had! The observation period ends tonight at 11:59 PM. We are currently sitting at 4,803 (!!) observations, which is above and beyond what I could have expected, but I want to see just how many we can get. Maybe it's too ambitious, but I think we can get to 6,000.

For our area, Allegan County seems to be where we have the fewest observations. So if you're feeling adventurous, maybe choose a park or preserve down in Allegan that you haven't been to before and go get a few more observations.

Keep up the great work, and I'll see you all on the other side of the finish line.

Also, a huge shoutout to our current top 3 observers: @ltomko @anna120 and @spencerhigh. They are absolutely killing it!

We did it!

Well, mostly you all did it!

I am beyond pleased with how our City Nature Challenge turned out. Pending any uploads still being processed, here are our stats:

6,620 observations
1,374 species
253 observers

That is simply amazing for our first attempt at this. You all have contributed so much valuable information to the iNaturalist database, and for that you all deserve to be commended. There are two people, however, who deserve a little extra commendation. @ltomko and @anna120 blew the rest of us away. With 1,362 and 1,224 observations, respectively, we would not have been close to our final numbers without them! Amazing work, and thank you from the bottom of my heart.

But wait, there's more!

Now that the observation period has closed, it's time for us all to put on our identification hats. One of the things that the organizers look at is the percentage of observations that end up at Research Grade, which is the highest level of verification available on iNaturalist. To do that we are all going to have to go back through the submissions and help verify the ones we can. We have until May 5th to get as close to 100% Research Grade as we can. Right now we are at 44.64% Research Grade, so I think we've got a shot a getting all of them done.

Here is a helpful guide on iNaturalist identification etiquette: https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/identification-etiquette-on-inaturalist-wiki/1503

Cheers, and happy IDing! If you see any particularly cool observations or rare species, please tag me (@trav_kurtz) in a comment so that I can try and get those observations noticed by the event organizers.
